Obstetrics and gynecological surgery.
Why did you choose medicine and your field in particular?
There is a writer named William Carlos Williams. Realizing that making a living as a poet was hard, he went into medicine. He wrote later that although he had thought all those years that he had sacrificed what he had wanted to do in life, in reality medicine had given him box seats in the theater of life. I was 20 or 21 when I read that, and box seats in the theater of life sounded good. In terms of obstetrics and gynecology, you’re standing on great history. If you want to change the fabric of a culture, then improve the quality of women’s and children’s lives.
What is the best part of your job?
I like the diversity of it. You have to know about many different things.
What are the most challenging aspects?
The most difficult thing is trying to take care of patients in a corporate culture.
How has your practice changed in recent years?
It changed a lot because I was in academia and I left it to go into private practice three or four years ago. Academia wasn’t very academic.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
No question: Healthy mothers and healthy babies.
What’s your professional philosophy?
Wise physicians know when to get in the way, and when to get out of the way. Sometimes it’s best to do nothing. I used to teach that to my students.
Do you foresee any breakthrough on the horizon that will significantly change your practice?
All physicians will be employed. Private practice will just go away. Also, the practice of medicine at the cellular level and nanotechnology will change everything. We’ll look like idiots in 10 years.
