Why did you choose medicine and your field in particular?
I was drawn to caring for the sick at a very early age. My father, who is a pediatrician, was an important role model.
What is the best part of your job?
Teaching medical students and residents about skin diseases and treatment. Helping patients with their skin problems and educating them about skin health and disease.
What are the most challenging aspects?
Patients often do not have the access they deserve to get affordable, timely and appropriate care. Although I try to assist the primary care physicians through education and consultation as well as by seeing patients, I am not satisfied with the results.
What is the goal of the research you’re involved with?
Telemedicine to provide access to dermatological specialist care by helping primary care physicians manage their patients. Also helping parents take care of pediatric skin diseases by using email to answer questions and reinforce the treatment plan.
How has your practice changed in recent years?
The OU School of Community Medicine and OU Physicians are stressing quality of care rather than the number of patients seen or procedures performed. Since presently volume is reimbursed more than quality, it is a challenge. Electronic records have changed work flow for the better.
Do you foresee any breakthrough on the horizon that will significantly change your practice?
In the next 10 years, we will have targeted treatments for many difficult to treat diseases.
